Here is a collection of my top ten favourite Notepad++ colour schemes and visual styles. Notepad++ is by far the best code editor I've used and the ability to change the editor colour scheme is a very nice feature allowing different colours based on time of day or programming language.
To use any of these Notepad++ colour schemes, download the XML file and move it to your Notepad++ themes folder (typically
C:\Program Files\Notepad++\themes\ or
C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\themes\). Restart Notepad++ if it is running, then from the settings menu select style configuration. You can select themes from the drop down list.

A dark blue pastel Notepad++ colour scheme based on colours of the sea using large fonts to create an eye pleasing theme.

Solarized is a sixteen color palette (eight monotones, eight accent colors) designed for use with terminal and gui applications. Solarized reduces brightness contrast but, unlike many low contrast color schemes, it retains contrasting hues for syntax highlighting readability.

Mozilla introduced an experimental web based code editor called Bespin which uses a brown colored theme of which looks nice and is now ported to Notepad++.
